Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Hort Park in Singapore. A friend invited me to join a photoshoot with other budding photographers.

Time

Taken during the golden hours, around 5 PM

Lighting

To get her head profile, I positioned her where the sun shine behind her back. As not to get a silhouette I added a DIY beauty dish (made by me out of my wife’s salad bowl  attached with 580EX speedlight) in front above her face. To get that perfect exposure I meter my camera to her face at +1.5 using spot metering.

Equipment

This was taken with Canon 5DMK3 and 85mm F1.2 lens plus DIY beauty dish with single 580EX speedlight

Inspiration

Her beauty. She is so pretty and so cool, an every photographer’s desire.

Editing

I only used Adobe LightRoom. If you get your composition, exposure and subject right, there’ll be nothing much to edit. I only edited to get the white balance right (but later decided to change to B&W, so no impact at all), cropping and other basic photo editing.

In my camera bag

For this photo shoot, I carried 5DMK3, 85mm F1.2 and 24-70mm F2.8 lens in case I need wider view. 2 pcs of 580EX speedlights (one is backup in case one failed which I already experienced). Lee ND filters in case I want to shoot at F1.2 with flash and the ambience lights is too strong. A pair of PocketWizards for my wireless DIY beauty dish. Around 20 pcs of rechargeable batteries for speedlight as some of these batteries may not be fully charged so it’s better to have more than regretting later. Also in my bag are color gels made out of colored plastic office supplies, a cheap but effective alternative to expensive color gels.

Feedback

For modeling shoots, bring your widest aperture lens to get a good bokeh of your photos. During shooting, always check the background, go for a clean and simple background. Ensure that your shutter speed is enough to get away from blurry results. I had several experience that my shutter speed was slow that the slight movement on the model or shaking of my hands resulted in a non-tack sharp pictures. Check photography forums for the best shutter speed settings.
