Location
I took this photo when I was on a mission trip in El Salvador for a Spring Break Service Immersion trip in college. My group was visiting the home of a friend of the mission program director. After touring the home and eating freshly cooked cashews, we walked down a long winding rocky trail to the creek where a woman was washing her clothes while her children were playing.Time
This photo was probably taken around 1:00 in the afternoon. We had been out building a classroom for a school and went out to the village after lunch to meet some friends of the program director.Lighting
I wanted to really focus on the eyes and give the photo a timeless feel which is why I added the bronze/unique feel.Equipment
I used my Canon Powershot S3-IS.Inspiration
I was captivated by this little girl at the creek. She is probably about 2 years old and she was standing quietly by her mom while her brothers played in the trees. She was not wearing anything and just had this blue bowl that she was captivated by. She is holding up this bowl to her face in the photo. Her eyes spoke volumes to me and just moved me deep in my soul. She had this pained tough expression in her eyes that far exceeded her age. She seemed wise and weathered but still so incredibly innocent. I have numerous photos of her and in each one her eyes tell a different story. I love how she is looking off to the distance with this intense look in her eyes.Editing
The only processing I did was I changed the color photo to bronze using the settings on my camera. In my camera bag
I am an amateur photographer and my Canon S3-IS is the most sophisticated camera I own although I hope to one day save up for a much nicer one. In my camera bag I had just the camera and a few memory cards.Feedback
I am no expert, but what I do is just try to capture moments that truly move me. I was so captivated by this little girl and I wanted desperately to be able to capture that emotion on camera. I wanted to preserve that moment and the feeling I had while sitting there at the creek with her. My advice would be to just take photo after photo, you do not need anything fancy or expensive to have a good photo (I have no doubt that it would help though!) I just took photo after photo of her and captured her from different angles and lighting. I would turn the flash on and off and just use trial and error. Experiment with angles and how you fill the frame.
