Behind The Lens

Location

Lake Kurwongbah, Petrie, Queensland

Time

Mid afternoon

Lighting

It was a horrible overcast day and there was no sign of straight sunlight, just horrible glare.

Equipment

Nikon D5000, Sigma 150-500. Handheld

Inspiration

The egret was walking deeper into the water and the reflection and the reeds struck me. The bird was seldom still so it was a bit of a challenge in low light.

Editing

I adjusted the shadows/highlights and the levels.

In my camera bag

I now pack my Nikon D7100, D3200 cameras. I invariably have the Sigma 150-500 latched to the camera and carry a Nikon DX 18-55, Nikon DX 55-200 and a Nikon DX 55-300.

Feedback

I think that with any photography being there and having patience is the most important thing. I always carry my camera with me because I never know what might turn up. I shoot mainly wildlife, particularly birds and being aware of what is around is paramount. A little education about the photographic targets always helps, knowing a little of the lifestyle of other critters takes guess work out of the when animals will or won't be active. Never be scared to use full automatics on your camera if you aren't sure. Take a test shot to see what the light is doing to your shot. You can make adjustments from there. Don't be scared that it won't work, you just never, never know!
