Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Central City, Iowa in April of 2012 where my wife has family and we were there visiting.

Time

The photo was taken around 3:00 p.m. and I believe it was a bit overcast which for me I like shooting.

Lighting

I generally like to shoot with a overcast sky and I believe this was one of those days. Overcast and cloudy days are great for getting shots anytime of the day and not be confronted with those nasty shadows. I did have a flash but didn't want to use it and scare the horses back into the barn

Equipment

At that time I was shooting with a Pentax K20D with a 55-300 mm lens, tripod and no flash.

Inspiration

This shot was actually a follow up shot I did two years earlier in August of 2010. We were in the area to visit family and I came across the two horses on a side road just off of Highway 13. The first image I liked a lot and even got a Judge's Favorite award. I had received many great comments on that earlier photo and hoping they were still there and as you can see they were.

Editing

As mentioned before I photographed these two horses two years earlier but this time I chose a portrait format instead of a landscape to give it more balance. I used the curve tool to pop up the saturation and cropped the image.

In my camera bag

Since the time of this photo I have moved onto a Canon 40D along with three lens; a 18-55 mm, 28-135 mm and a 70-300 mm. I always keep three batteries, a cleaning cloth for my lens and a plastic bag to protect my camera in case it rains. I also keep a mono pod in my car at all times and a tripod when I go out for a planned shoot. Being retired and on a fixed income I may not always have the equipment I would like but do have the basic for what I need.

Feedback

If you get a great shot and if your ever in that area again down the road it never hurts to swing by to take another look to see if history can repeat itself and you can end up with another great shot to share with others. Now there is one thing that I have started to do when I travel along the highways and interstates is when I see a shot that looks interesting and I don't have time to stop then I will note the location so when we return back I have a heads up on the upcoming location so I can slow down and pull over safely in time before passing it. I think one of the more important pieces of advise given by photographers is to always have your camera at hand and ready to shoot. Just as in fishing, no one enjoys hearing about the one that got away... Happy shooting - Jack
