Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on a week-long photo meet-up in the Bavarian Forest. We were 30 photographers and had a lot of adventures there. You can imagine that it was hard to take the camera out of the hand without missing a great picture. It was a wonderful time with wonderful people. One of them: Hanna, the girl in the picture.

Time

It was in the evening, after a long car journey in search of the mouth of a river. We got lost and stopped to not miss the beautiful evening light and the setting sun.

Lighting

The picture was not planned. The light was just perfect, as it was and when I saw Hanna there, I had to use it. No flash, no reflector, only natural light.

Equipment

The image was taken with the Canon 60d and a lens with a fixed focal length of 50mm.

Inspiration

The whole meet-up was very inspiring. It was nice just to take pictures without having any pressure to create the best possible image. I have photographed only for me, which was very liberating. I usually work very conceptual, but this photo was taken in the moment.

Editing

I shoot in raw mode and have developed the photo with slight adjustments to only. In addition, I have decided to black and white, because I felt that the atmosphere thereby comes out more. The heat of the day still comes out well, even without colors.

In my camera bag

I always work with very reduced equipment. Too Much technique prevents me to be creative. With much technique I stand there and think about what lens would be fitting now, or if I should use flash, while the situation and the moment is lost quickly... In my bag is therefore mostly just my Canon 60d with 2 fixed focal length (50mm & 28mm), a tripod and a self-timer, because I often make self-portraits.

Feedback

I think it's important sometimes to meet up with fellow photographers. Together to talk about photography, or just about good food, is great. In addition, you have the opportunity to learn from each other. Other photographers understand the crazy photographers problems better than "normal" people and together you can laugh about mistakes and experiences. The photographs will then be secondary. And yet great.
