Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph at Miracle Gardens in Dubai. I mainly went there to look at the different sculptures covered in flowers and it is truly a beautiful sight! I happened to see a sparrow in the area and tracked it until I got the perfect shot. This is a kind of shot you would expect to see an eagle or a falcon in or a bird catching its prey.

Time

This shot was taken around noon in June 2013. It was completely unplanned. This is what I love about the art of photography. It is only you who can decide whether or not it is the picture perfect moment. It's like they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Lighting

The lighting used in this picture is natural. I wanted it to signify that the sparrow is trying to get away from the scorching Dubai heat. I normally try to play with the lighting a little bit for my other shots like when I would like to make something in the shot the center of attention. I love the way the light shines off of the sparrows beak.

Equipment

This was shot using a Nikon D5100. No tripod was used to take this shot. Aperture: f/5.6 Exposure: 1/800 sec ISO: 200 Lens: Nikon 55mm-300mm

Inspiration

Miracle Gardens in Dubai was a fairly new attraction at the time and one of the things that I am passionately photography is flowers and landscape. I was trying to see what kind of aperture and shutter speed I should used to be able to get the best photograph possible and ended up tracking this sparrow. Note to other readers: due to the heat in Dubai, birds tend to find shaded or cool spots as it is way too hot and they get dehydrated due to the scorching heat. So seeing a single sparrow in the midst of a garden that is so far off from the city, was somewhat unnatural.

Editing

I did not touch the integrity of the picture. This is the way it was shot and I intended to keep it that way. To me it seems like the perfect picture.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Nikon D5100 ofcourse, the 18mm-55mm lens as well as the 55mm-300mm lens, my 72 inch tripod and a wireless remote. I am still aspiring to be a better photographer. This is just my starter kit.

Feedback

There are a bunch of different places one can go to like Lotusland in Santa Barbara, Griffith Park in Los Angeles, anywhere in Aruba (it's a very beautiful island), Philadelphia Zoo has a bird sanctuary that would be great for taking pictures of birds. I do not leave the house without my trusty camera and tripod. You never know when the perfect moment may be in front of you.
