Location
This photograph was taken on Swan Bay wetlands on the Bellarine peninsula in Victoria, Australia. Swan bay attracts a lot of local and migratory birds. It is a breeding area for fish and crustaceans. It is a tidal salt water estuary.Time
The photograph was taken at approximately 10.00am on a warm summer morning with a clear sky..Lighting
It was a bright day with natural lighting and the sun was behind me shining on to the subject.Equipment
I have a Nikon D3200 camera with a Nikkor 55-200 lens. This shot was hand held through the open window of my car. The birds in this area seem to be comfortable with cars pulling up but as soon as you get out of the car, the birds scare.Inspiration
I regularly drive to this area as there is good access to a variety of birds such as spoonbills, ibises, ducks, heron, pelicans and terns. This particular bird was close to the shore and was actively hunting....perfect situation for a photograph.Editing
There was minimal post processing as it was a good clear shot. I have added a bit more blue to the water colour. In my camera bag
I nearly always use the 55-200 lens. I need to get some more lenses.Feedback
Luck plays a big part. The subject has to be there. It is useful to know the right places to go for bird photography. This particular spot regularly has a variety of birds resting and feeding and has good access. As I have already stated, the birds in this area are tolerant of cars which allows you to get quite close to them.
