Location
I captured this image on the banks of the Mississippi river just south of the Arch in St. Louis, Missouri. The flood of 1993 sent the USS Inaugural moored near the Arch downstream and the WWII minesweeper sunk. During the drought of 2012, the minesweeper surfaced during low river water levels. I scrambled over the floodwall and down an embankment to capture this image.Time
I captured this image in late afternoon.Lighting
I simply got lucky with the lighting on this image. HDR lends itself to cloudy days.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS, a SLIK tripod and Photomatix post production software.Inspiration
When I heard that the sunken WWII minesweeper located just south of the Arch in St. Louis was exposed due to low water levels, I immediately scrambled to the sight to take a photo. Lucky for me , barges were parked next to the ship and the industrial background added to the forlorn quality of the image.Editing
I used HDR to create this photo. I took 3 images , one over exposed, one image underexposed and a third image correctly exposed. Using Photomatix software, I merged these 3 photos to create one dynamic picture.In my camera bag
I always carry a SLIK tripod and consider equally as important as my camera.Feedback
If you decide to capture an image using HDR, make sure that you have a good tripod. Try not to "overcook" the image in postproduction to keep the image from looking as natural as possible.
