Location
I took this picture at Glen Canyon Dam - Lake PowellTime
I specifically planned to be at the dam by late afternoon. I arrived the day before and looking at the area I knew straight away that the best time for pictures was going to be before dusk.Lighting
Lake Powell area is offering an incredible light scenario at dusk. I did prefer late afternoon light instead of the morning one. The lighh was much more "warmer".Equipment
I used my Nikon D3 S with the Nikon 24-70 mm f 2,8. A Manfrotto tripod together with an Acratech Headball are normally my "best friends" for Architecture/Landscape photography. As filter I used a CPL Polarizer filter by Hoya.Inspiration
When i was walking on the pedestrian walkaway of the dam I immediately got inspired to take this picture. The Nikon zoom was set on the 24mm and it matched perfectly with what was on my mind. The poles, the net and the guard rail created this beautiful composition of lines with an amazing perspective. I already knew that this picture needed to be converted in B&W to give more enhancement between highlights and shades. I converted the picture with Nik Software plug-in for PS.Editing
I'm normally happy with RAW files. I use PS CC 2015 just to boost little bit the contrast and enhance the colors. Controlling the light in a photo "on the field", is something that I still love to do. I know would be more easy doing it at home in your computer, but I'm a photographer not a graphic designer. In my camera bag
It depend by the trip that I planned. I luckily own several cameras and lenses, so for me is exciting as well the preparation of my bags, before the trip itself, like a young student preparing his books for the next day lesson. A common bag of mine will have the Nikon D3 S with the Nikon 70-200mm F2, 8 VRII & The Nikon D810 with the 24-70mm f2,8. I normally carry a set of filters (Polarizer, UV & ND), Tripod with a solid headball. I learned to carry always extra batteries, especially when you're shooting in the cold weather.Feedback
The only advice is to be patiance and wait the right time of the time, according the effect/result you would like to achieve. Placing the tripod and camera in the right place is probably even more important than your settings. I use to use as naturalist photographer, that with animals and insects you must be as fast as you can to froze the subject in action, with landscape and macro is exactly the opposite.
