Location
I was returning to "the other Washington" from a trip to Washington DC. We'd been in solid cloud cover the whole trip, until we started the descent into SeaTac airport. Just as we crossed east to west over the Cascade Mountains the plane broke out of the overcast.Time
This four-and-a-half hour flight into Seattle was scheduled to arrive at 3:30 pm. We were a bit ahead of schedule.Lighting
When we dropped out underneath the cloud layer, the mountain range just popped due to that magical, low angle, light so seldom seen from the ground. It was late January, so the suns arc was still low, making for bright souther slopes and dark shadows on the north side.Equipment
I didn't have time to grab my camera bag, but was just able to snap a few shots with my iPhone... an "old school" 4s.Inspiration
The inspiration was all in the opportunity when we descended out of the cloud layer.Editing
Minimal cropping and a bit of color adjustment. In my camera bag
On trips like this I usually need to pack light, so it's usually a Nikon full frame body with a nifty fifty, maybe a 14-24 in a small-ish shoulder bag. For this shot, though, I only had time to grab my cell-phone.Feedback
Sometimes opportunities simply pop up. Planning is always wise, but unanticipated events can call for rapid response, and sometimes you just have to grab your cell-phone.
