Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the shore of swan bay which is a wildlife reserve in Victoria, Australia. There are a lot of migratory birds on swan bay but, as the name suggests, the swans are the most obvious. Australian swans are black!

Time

This photo was taken in the morning as I go for a walk each day beside the shores of swan bay. It was somewhere between 7.30a and 9.00a.

Lighting

It was a sunny day and the lighting was natural. The reflection from the sun on the water overwhelmed the photo so I edited the photo to bring up the ripples in the water which then turned the swans into silhouettes.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D3200 with a 55-200mm telephoto lens. This shot was hand held.

Inspiration

I love taking photos of birds as there are a lot of them around swan bay.

Editing

Yes, I altered the photo to accentuate the ripples on the water so I edited the exposure in a way as to turn the swans in to silhouettes.

In my camera bag

I only carry the camera with the 55-200 mm lens.

Feedback

It can be difficult to get close to wild birds so you need an element of good luck. Being quiet and moving slowly can help. Sometimes being inside a car allows you to get closer to wild birds.
