Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this image during a trip to Denver Colorado, my wife and I were attending the Botanical garden event that year. I spotted this small flower not included in the exhibit. To capture this image I had to get down on my knees. I wanted to include the sky just peaking through the tall grass about a foot behind the flower.

Time

This was captured mid day with the sun high in the sky.

Lighting

Having the sun high in the sky with a slight cloud cover granted me beautiful defused light. I wanted to show all the small pieces of the flower without the harsh shadows a mid day sun can give. I waited a few min for a cloud to move in front of the sun before capturing this frame.

Equipment

This image was captured on a Nikon d5100 using a 35mm. Handheld with no other equipment used.

Inspiration

I saw the flower all by itself with the grass behind and the image came to mind. I like to go into areas with general concepts in mind, but rarely have a exact shot in my mind. I enjoy the hunt and surprise of shooting in a documentary style. It challenges me to think on my feet and find the image.

Editing

I am not one to over process a image, I believe in the image being ready out of camera. I shoot in raw then convert to jpeg in Lightroom, minor color correction and contrast are done.

In my camera bag

I have upgraded cameras sense shooting this image, but I still use a nikon, a D750 now and continue to use prime lens most of the time. My kit consists of Nikon D750, 20mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 70-300mm, macro tubes a sb-700 and a reflector. I also carry a Globe Trotter tripod.

Feedback

When I go out to shoot I only go with a concept in mind. The day I captured the lone purple flower I was focusing on capturing the best composition possible, no matter the subject. One tip I always tell people is to change your point of view, sit on the ground, or stand on a park bench, whatever it takes to see everything in a way you normally don't. If that dose not work you are moving to fast, stop sit on the ground and wait, the image will come to you in time.
