Location
Taken on cold November's evening 2014 at the annual Loughborough Fair in the east midlands.of England. The fair is steeped in history as has a charter which has seen the fair feature in Loughborough for over 700 years!. There are over 100 showmen and women who travel with the fair.Time
I tend to take as many photo's from twilight to total darkness and include moon and stars if it's a clear sky. Being November best time is 5-7pm just as the blue is fading from the sky.Lighting
The lighting is bright enough for modern day DSLR the fairground lights are bright and give shadows and tone-experiment with iso and shutter timings to get different looks. It can be too strong so it's worth trying an ND filter or two to lower the intensity.Equipment
My main body is a Nikon D750 with a Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 lens- Velbon Tripod with fast camera release plate for moving quickly around the area. I have two flash guns but did'nt see a reason to use them as i wanted a ambient feel to the photo's. Nikon compatible MC-DC2 corded remote controller reduce camera shake and which can lock the shutter open and in live view composition is easier. Cokin Glass ND filters to different darkness strengths with lens slide mount.Inspiration
The light and movement with people standing still in front of the merry go round somehow seemed like a time machine effect was occurring and i had to capture that scene. I had taken 5 -6 shots trying to get the breaks at the top of the ride to be more significant as too long they would have blurred into one whole light.Editing
Just used Lightroom to darken some areas and sharpen slightly in the foreground -otherwise it has no editing. In my camera bag
I travel light and quickly as there can be a build up of crowds later -so tripod is bagged and camera is bagged and ready to go. Usually i have the kit as before but i might take a different lens Nikkor 50mm f1.8G but it's limited in scope. Be aware that It can be tricky shooting as people don't see tripod legs in the dark and your expensive DSLR is easy to trip over!!Feedback
Be aware of the surroundings-check the area in daylight -posistion of the sun/moon and streetlights when light falls -any hazards traffic weather cover etc. I had company from fellow photographers and you may not get the place you wanted at the right time. Be patient and watch for compositions like jigsaw pieces and hopefully you will be capturing something special.
