Behind The Lens
Location
I took this photo many years ago at The Maryland Zoo with my young daughter in tow. I would spend many hours there photographing anything and everything - just for the experience.Time
I believe this was taken mid-morning, right after they had been feed. The prairie dogs were making their rounds, greeting all and preparing for their naps.Lighting
The lighting in this photo was pretty amazing that day - they way it lit up their faces just enough you could see their expressions. It also gave me enough exposure to create the amazing depth of field.Equipment
I believe I was using a Minolta (not quite sure of the model or lens - too many years ago) - no tripod, just using the concrete wall enclosure for stability.Inspiration
My goal every time going to the zoo was to try and capture the prairie dogs engaged, with each other and especially with the babies. I just happened to be at the right place and the right time to capture this shot and I'm so fortunate that I did.Editing
The post-processing was a little bit of cropping - everything else is all natural. I have recently started using Lightroom and Photoshop for post-editing - usually only to enhance not to manipulate. In my camera bag
Now I have a new Nikon K7100, an 18-200 DX, 50-300 DX and my Manfrotto tripod. Also some odds and ends like a small note pad and pen, extra battery, rain protection for the backpack and the manual for the camera. All of this has given me the opportunity to create my own website to share all of my photos: www.jlw-photos.comFeedback
My advice would to be prepared and patient. If you have a certain type of photo you're trying to capture, take a little time, observe the behavior then have fun.
