Location
This photo was taken in my front yard, just steps from my door, in the Columbia Valley, SE BC, Canada. I am a self taught photographer, and have been taking photos for just over 7 years now.Time
It was a winter day, around 3:30 in the afternoon, when the Cedar Waxwings arrived for a berry feast. They were a fairly large flock, and all wanted a turn at filling their bellies.Lighting
I find a cloudy day, such as this was, to give a soft look and feel to photos The lighting was bright enough to be able to catch all the colours and details of their wings, and the beautiful plume like feathers on the top of their heads, but not blow out the red of the berries.Equipment
The Waxwings flew into my yard quickly, and can leave just as fast, so, I grabbed my Nikon D600, with my Sigma 50-500mm lens, (I did not have time for a tripod), and I hurried outside for a few handheld shots. The birds were pretty cooperative, and I was able to get a few decent shots, before they were off searching for more edibles. It was bright enough, I did not need to use a flash.Inspiration
Birds have been my favourite subject for photography since I first started my hobby. I am inspired to photograph all of them I see. For this particular photo, there was no planning at all, as it was a very spontaneous reaction to grab my camera and go when the Waxwings flew in. I usually have my camera nearby, with my safari lens (that is what I call the Sigma 50-500mm lens) on it, so with quick easy access to it, I was able get off a few shots.Editing
I did a fair bit to this photo as far rearranging things goes. This is actually 2 photos of the same waxwing, take seconds apart, in different poses. I then merged the 2 birds into one frame, then I added part of a third photo, the the branches to the top right hand corner, jus to add to the overall balance and feel to it.In my camera bag
I use my Nikon D600, with a variety of lenses, ranging from a Nikon 24-120mm, Sigma 50-500mm, and my Sigma 150-600mm for birding photos. I also carry my Kinko tubes, and a range of filters, and I never leave without my tripod and remote.Feedback
My advice to others would really be sure to have your camera close by, and easily available, because sometimes the best captures are the ones that are more spontaneous ones. I also like to play with my photos, like I did with this one, and now even take photos specifically to make composites of them. It is fun to use ones imagination and creativity.
