Location
The photo was taken at Laperousse Bay in Maui, HawaiiTime
The photo was taken around 9pmLighting
It was a long exposure shotEquipment
The camera, Nikon D600, was mounted on a tripod with a cable release. The lens was a Tokina 16-28 at 2.8. The exposure was 20"Inspiration
It was a perfect clear night and Venus was rising close to the Milky way. I was particularly inspired by the reflection of Venus over the ocean next to the majestic milky way.Editing
I did some noise reduction in lightroom, increased the sharpness and the contrast. I also increased the saturation to make the purples and the magentas of the milky way pop.In my camera bag
I normally carry my D600, 2 lenses my Tokina 16-28 2.8, my Nikon 28-300 and my Nikon 50mm 1.8. I also carry a travel tripod, a cable release and a 2 filters (one circular polarizer and a 3 stops ND).Feedback
In order to reproduce the shot a very very dark location is a must. Any spot with no light pollution whatsoever. A clear fall or winter night it is better. Scouting the location during the day will also help, it is better to find a place with nice interesting foreground for the milky way. I found the stars app for my phone very useful to locate the milky way and other objects next to it. Last but not least a lot of patient is very important.
