Behind The Lens

Location
This was taken in the Kruger National Park in South Africa, I had stopped the car and he just looked up as if asking to be photographed.
Time
It was mid-afternoon with fairly bright sunlight, but he was standing in shade.
Lighting
As he was in shade, the lighting was perfect even though the afternoon sun was still fairly strong. In zooming into the animal I managed to cut out any hard light flares.
Equipment
I used a Nikon D40 with 300mm Sigma Lens with aperture priority. As the engine was running (one does not switch off engines when there are Elephant and buffalo nearby), I used a travel cushion on the window to reduce shake as a tripod would have been too cumbersome for the car.
Inspiration
The Duiker was watching me watching him, and with such a perfect pose and lighting, I just had to take the shot
Editing
The only post processing I did was slight cropping.
In my camera bag
I only have one camera, that's my Nikon D40, a 300mm Sigma lens and a Standard 55mm lens, my neck cushion, filters, extra batteries and SD cards, Speed-light flash, String (to make a makeshift tripod), plastic sandwich bag and elastic bands in case of rain.
Feedback
Check the lighting, late afternoon or early morning are the best, but sometimes you get lucky and have a beautiful filtered light through the bushes. Try to make sure you get the eyes, and as much detail of the animal as possible. Getting your DOF correct can only improve the shot.
