Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a working bison ranch/Bed and Breakfast in central South Dakota. I stayed there for a weekend and spent hours one evening photographing the heard as they were getting fed. They must have been cery excited for the hay because they were romping around and rolling in the dirt. The dust in combination with the warm sunset glow made such beautiful light that almost every shot I took was gorgeous.

Time

The image was taken right at sundown. Just after the sun dipped below the horizon. My favorite time to shoot.

Lighting

When I first started shooting the sun was too high in the sky and I was getting some really heavy and unwanted lens flare. So I decided to put the camera down for a few minutes and just watch the heard until the light was just right.

Equipment

This shot was taken a few years ago with a Nikon D100. I remember the first couple images i took were too dark and contrasty and didnt really show the dust very well. So I opened up my aperture to get as much of the available light as I could and so I could use a fast enough shutter speed to capture the action.

Inspiration

What inspires me to take almost all of my images is light. For me photography isn't about shooting a subject. . . It's about how the light interacts with your subject.

Editing

For this shot, in photoshop, I cropped, adjusted the levels and contrast, I color corrected then lastly, I sharpened it.

In my camera bag

Depends on what I am planning on doing but In my bag now I have my Nikon d810 with a tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 and a nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8. I have uv haze, polarizing and neutal density filters for both lenses. I also have my backup d90 and a couple of basic lenses.I have a sb900 speedlight and a sb500 as well. I cary reflectors and diffusers for those too. I usually have my monopod and mini tripod with me as well.

Feedback

Sometimes the hardest part about photography is just getting your camera to the location. Your extra work always pays off! My advice for anyone trying to get a shot like this is come to South Dakota!
