Behind The Lens

Location

I live in the country about 4 1/2 miles south of Paris, IL. I captured this image of my daughters kitten in our back yard.

Time

I took this picture mid morning. I remember the grass was still wet from the dew.

Lighting

I used a camera mounted Canon flash with a diffuser.

Equipment

I captured this image using a Canon EOS Rebel SL1 & I used a 50mm 1.4 lens. I placed the camera on a tripod, framed the image for what I thought looked best, and snapped one picture using a cable release. And yes you read correctly, I only took one photo and knew I had the picture I was hoping for. A little preparation and a lot of luck. My wife was helping to keep the kitten entertained while I was getting the equipment ready.

Inspiration

My daughter inspired this image. Ever since the kitten was big enough for her to hold she had let it play in her basket. She'd place toys in the basket and the kitten would play with them and climb all over it. It would jump in and out and my daughter thought it was awesome that her kitten liked to play in the basket. The kitten would even nap in the basket. It had pretty much so became the kittens basket...lol

Editing

I edited the image using photoshop to crop and deepen the tone along with adding a little bit of saturation. I masked off the darker area on the kitten slightly so you could get a better look at the kittens natural coat & eyes.

In my camera bag

I have upgraded equipment since this photo was taken. I currently carry a Canon 5D Mark III and use the 135mm 2.0L lens. I very seldom use my canon 430ex flash but still bring it with me just incase on photo shoots. I also use a reflector when needed.

Feedback

My advise to others is to just keep shooting. If you love to take photographs your images will improve with time as you learn more about your camera. The biggest advise I could give is to stop shooting everything in auto mode and start shooting in manual. You'll be amazed at what you can achieve with lots of practice. Don't let a bad image discourage you. Think of every image as a learning tool. I personally look back at every image I've taken and think I could have done it another way to make it look better but that's just me. I'm constantly pushing myself to get the best image I can get! Be patient and have fun like you always do! Don't let others discourage you!
