Behind The Lens

Location
At Flamingo Gardens in Davie, Florida www.flamingogardens.org
Time
This picture was taken in the early afternoon hours under natural sunlight.
Lighting
The bird was under a tree and a beam of light filtering from the tree canopy was very helpful illuminating the eye.
Equipment
My camera at that time was a Nikon D80, currently have a Nikon D7100. The lens used was a Sigma 70-300 mm with a regular monopod.
Inspiration
I am a volunteer photographer for a noble cause. Flamingo Gardens is a non-profit organization caring for animals in distressed giving them a place to live, animal care, food, and love for life. I feel compelled by the silent and dedicated work they do. It's an honor for me to be able to help through my photography bringing awareness to the public.
Editing
Post-processing is almost a must on every picture moreover if you capture RAW files as I do. Even so I try to spend the most time taking the picture and the less in front of my computer. I use a simple editor just to enhance a bit the contrast, curves, highlights, and sharpness.
In my camera bag
I try to have all is needed and them some. Being in the right place at the right moment may not be repeated twice. My favorite lens is a Sigma 70-300 mm which does not have vibration reduction so it needs to be used with a monopod or a tripod. Color rendition and sharpness are super.
Feedback
The bird was asleep and I stood next to him until the eye was open. He did not keep it open for long so I had the be very patient waiting for the right moment. Having the camera set to continuous shots it helped me to capture his eye open. I do talk to animals in similar conditions and for the most part they respond nicely to soft commands. Nonetheless, photography is the moment and having the chance to capture it is a great thing. Patience is a virtue and any photographer without it will miss great opportunities.
