Ravens like to pose, but in addition you did a great job indeed. Could you please tell us which lens did you use and how far were you from the subject?

Fantastic shot. I have tried so many times to get a good one of crow's/raven's and they always turn out looking like a mass of tar haha. Well done

Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was made in a smal zoo in Volkel, The Netherlands, next to the local airforce base. The bird was sitting in a green wire cage, so I had to shoot 'through' the wires. A good way to test my, then brand new, f2.8 70-200 lens.

Time

At the end of my walk trough this zoo, the sun was setting. For a couple of minutes clouds did not obscure the sun.

Lighting

While 95% of all my animal pictures are made with portable flash lighting, this one is just natural light.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 6D and a Sigma f2.8 70-200 on 157 mm. No tripod, no flash, just a little luck.

Inspiration

This bird was looking at me in a very majestic/arrogant manner. It came a little closer to take a good look at me. When it looked the othher way for a second I made the shot.

Editing

The only post processing I did was raising the shadows a little and lowering the highlights a bit to balance the picture to my liking. That's it.

In my camera bag

I regularly go out to make pictures of wild horses next to the river. On these occasions and other field trips, I bring a Canon 6d, a 28 mm, a 70-200 mm and a couple of portable flashes. Usualy with one light weight stand for a flash. Enough stuff to make the pictures I like and still being able to walk with it for a long time.

Feedback

Be patient. Be nice to your subjects. Most animals do not like to be surprised, so make shure they can hear you entering. Whistle, sing or talk. The more relaxed you are, the easier they will be. And be patient.
