I like this. What ND filter(s) are you using? I bought a set of square filters but they all have a magenta hue to them so I scrapped them.

Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in Kill Devil Hills, Outer Banks, North Carolina where I have been coming since I was a child.

Time

This was sometime mid-day while I was enjoying a day relaxing on the beach. There were people playing in the waves and great cloud movement so I thought it would be a great time to do a really long exposure, making the other beach goers disappear and making the surf look like cotton.

Lighting

Because I wanted a sort of ethereal look to the image and a certain sense of peace associated with the lone umbrella and chair, I used a 10 stop neutral density filter to be able to drag the shutter for a minute or two.

Equipment

Canon 5D mk iii, 24-70 L, 10 stop ND filter, tripod, and cable release.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture something that really speaks to the feeling you get when you sit with your toes in the sand and the rest of the world melts away.

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom to make sure my exposure and color correction were on point and added a little saturation to the umbrella and chair.

In my camera bag

I always carry at least one camera body, a 24-70, 70-200, 10 stop ND filter, cable release, 580EX II, some cactus V6's, and plenty of CF cards

Feedback

A really aggressive ND filter is essential for a shot like this in bright mid day sun. That, and a tripod and cable release. Set your camera on Bulb mode stop down your aperture to 18 or 22 and experiment with locking the shutter open for minutes at a time. You might over expose or under expose the first few times so it takes some time. This is a fully manual exposure so it's very trial and error. Give yourself plenty of time at whatever location you are shooting at.
