Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image of the Common Redpoll behind our property on the edge of our city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. I was walking through the trails in the bush and as I was coming out of the bush near a country bus stop, there were six Redpolls flitting around in the bushes low to the ground. They migrate through our city in the autumn.

Time

This image was taken in the afternoon at 4:21 pm on November 18, 2012. It was late autumn.

Lighting

It was an overcast day when I took this picture. It is natural light.

Equipment

This is one of the very first pictures I took with my Canon Rebel T4i I purchased in the fall of 2012. The lens is a Canon EF S55 - 250mm / f4 - 5.6 IS II lens. Exposure was 1/400 sec at f 5.6 with a focal length of 250mm. I still have this camera but have also purchased the new Canon 70 D this past spring of 2014. I am a Canon girl!

Inspiration

I love walking in the bush as I am also a hunter. Hiking, ATVing, Kayaking, Canoeing, and Snowmobing are many of my passions which enable me to appreciate and get up close and personal with Wildlife. My camera is always with me and turned on when I am out on my adventures. This outing was just another one of my daily outings and I just loved how the Redpoll blended in with the bushes and how confident and majestic the birds presented themselves. If an animal or bird catches my attention, I love capturing it in its natural environment.

Editing

I did crop my photo and I added a little contrast and clarity to the image but that is about it.

In my camera bag

I carry a LowPro Sling bag which has my Canon 70 D in it with a Canon 55 - 270 mm/f 4-5.6 IS II lens and a Canon EF-S 18 - 135mm / f3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. I also carry a little gorilla tripod in my bag just in case I don't have my large tripod with me. A rain sleeve, large flashlight and a head lamp are musts as I love early morning, late evening and night photography for those amazing landscape pictures.

Feedback

People always say to me, "You must wait for hours for the great wildlife pictures you take." My reply is, "No, I always keep moving and enjoy the thrill of the "hunt" and I capture whatever I am very fortunate to come across." So my advice is to dress in camouflage, wear comfortable and supportive footwear and get out armed with your camera kept turned on and enjoy and appreciate your surroundings creating your own opportunities to capture the beautiful wildlife in their natural habitat. If you sit and wait, nothing ever comes along!
