Location
This image was shot at the amazing Gullfos (Golden falls) falls in the canyon of Hvítá river in southwest Iceland.Time
It was December 30th so sunset was around 3pm at that time of year in Iceland.Lighting
I was hoping for a spectacular sunset as the cloud was looking good and for a while hiding the sun. Just as the sun started going down behind the horizon it emerged from behind the cloud giving me the opportunity to try and shoot a sun star. It was hard as there were parts of cloud just over the sun stopping it from producing a decent star, also the spray from the falls created extra flare issues; after a number of shots in quick succession, this one prevailed.Equipment
At the time I shot on Canon, this is a 5DMK2 with 17-40mm lens, Gitzo tripod.Inspiration
I was travelling Iceland for 3 weeks during that winter, Gullfos was high on the egenda to photo at sunset due its western position and shear awesomeness. I wanted to get down the path next to the falls; no chance this time of year, the path was frozen, you would have had to have a death wish to go down, even if you did, the spray was immense and froze your face and eyes instantly withou getting anywhere near.Editing
Basic adjustments in PS, namely S curve in adjustments, clone tool for a little flare that messed with the image. In my camera bag
I now shoot with a D810 with a Nikon 14-24mm that never leaves the body, I usually have my walk around camera with me (Nikon D7100) with an 18-140mm VR. I have a 50mm, PC-E 24mm (tilt and shift), and 180mm Nikon FX's but these rarely leave the house. The 14-24mm is annoying, although I have Wonderpana NDs for it, they turn the camera into a windmill due to their size., so I carry a few Lee Filters for the 18-140mm including a big stopper. F-stop camera bag and I own Gitzo and Sirui tripods/heads.Feedback
Go to Iceland in the winter, mid winter it's amazing, the sun rises around 11am and sets around 3pm, with around an hour twilight either side. It means the sun is constantly at a low trajectory and barely lifts above the horizon all day, giving amazing light and a wealth of aurora hunting time at night ;) I'm going back in March solo, and running workshops there in October 2015, but I'm longing to go back in December/January time!!!
