Location
This photo was taken at Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon in Iceland. We were on a camping trip around the ring road in Iceland and this immediately became one of our favorite spots in the world.Time
This was taken right before sunset in September of 2014. The sky had turned an unbelievable shade of purple and we had been racing to make it to the lagoon in time after a long day of driving. Luckily we made it with a minutes to enjoy the scene and snap a couple photos.Lighting
The lighting that night was amazing. I stuck around for a bit after the sun dipped below the horizon as the scene became a bit moodier with deeper purples and blues. I love taking photos during dusk and feel that photographers often miss out by abandoning a sunset to early. I tried to get a lot of water in the photo as it was beautifully reflecting the colors of the sky.Equipment
I shot this with an Canon EOS Rebel T3. Being a novice photographer and overly excited about the scenery I had left my tripod in the car. I mostly used various rockpiles to stabilize the camera along with a 10 second timer. It was pretty late and I had quite a few photos turn out a bit blurry; luckily this was not one of them.Inspiration
It was a very cold night and I was at the lagoon with only a couple other photographers Most of my shots were of the lagoon itself but noticed another photographer had a primo spot on the shoreline. He appeared to be absolutely frigid but completely dedicated to getting the shot. It was a very tranquil setting and I thought capturing him in the setting would add a bit to the atmosphere and narrative of the photo.Editing
Most of my post processing was done in lightroom. I really like using the graduated filter option to bring out the background and sky. I did make mild to moderate adjustments to the contrast and white balance. I also used the radial filter to highlight the photographer in the lower right corner. In my camera bag
Most of my photos are take while camping or backpacking so I usually pack pretty lightly. I have stuck with entry level DSLR's as I tend to beat them up a bit and currently own a Nikon D3300. I have the stock 18-55 mm lens along with a 55-200 mm zoom. I also bring a circular polarizer which I rarely use (only to protect my lense in wet conditions) and a ND filter for long exposure shots. I will occasionally bring a tripod for shorter hikes if it's darker conditions or I am looking to get a long exposure shot.Feedback
I always love landscaping shots that also tell a bit of a story. I have lately been try to capture distant people, animals or buildings in my landscape photos as I think it often adds a bit of perspective and grandeur to the scene. I also like to take a few minutes to enjoy the scenery before taking any photos. When I do this I often find that the first couple photos are often my best which is what happened in the above photo.
