Behind The Lens

Location

This foto was taken at Nossob Camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park which includes South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. Great photo opportunities for wildlife.

Time

The whole afternoon dark clouds were threatening while we were having a barbecue in the evening. Suddenly thunder and lightening started, quite near the camp. I left everything barbecue, grabbed my camera and tripod to set it up.

Lighting

I pointed the camera in the direction of the most lightening activity and in the on and off light of the lightening tried to compose some kind of a picture. There was some urgency to get setup because storms tend to move by quite quickly. While all this was happening I was calculating what settings. It was very dark and I zoomed in somewhat to eliminate the light from the camp. Wide open aperture and long exposure with 3 second timer to capture more than one lightening streak in one shot.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D700 full-frame camera, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens and a SLIK PRO 700 DX tripod.

Inspiration

This was an entirely opportunistic shot as thunder storms and levels thereof is totally unpredictable. In short you don't know what is going to happen when it starts, if it starts.

Editing

There was not really any post processing to do. I changed the white balance to give it a slightly warmer look and that was it.

In my camera bag

I was in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park to photograph wildlife and nature. In my bag most of the time I carry a Nikon D700 (full-frame), Nikon D300 (cropped-frame), Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, Nikon 2X Converter, Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens and Nikon SB900 Speedlight. I always have a tripod close-by.

Feedback

If a storm is brewing in your area and you have the time, try and find a few good locations for composition before the time so that depending in which direction the most lightening activity is you are more or less prepared. Check and experiment with camera settings beforehand.
