Location
This photo was taken in Lake Tahoe, Nevada from a ski lift after a huge blizzard.Time
I remember looking out the window and seeing everything covered in snow-- the landscape was so pristine and white. My family and I hurried to the ski resort to do some powder skiing, and when we got to the first ski lift I saw this view of the trees all covered in snow. This was taken in the early morning during the heart of winter.Lighting
The sun hit the trees just right in the morning, so the trees were not washed out or too dark.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D5100, lens: AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G, no tripod, no flash.Inspiration
Seeing the ski resort this pristine (usually there is a constant flow of people, along with multiple ski/snowboard tracks in the snow) and seeing the blue skies after such a big blizzard (usually the sky is still a grey/black) was what inspired me to capture the moment, as these are such a rare occasion.Editing
I used Aperture (by Apple) to edit the photo. In my camera bag
I always take my Nikon D5100, as it is a good quality, not too heavy camera. I also bring two lenses: an 18-55 mm lens and a 55-300 mm lens. The smaller lens is great for taking landscapes and portraits, and the zoom lens is great for taking pictures of wildlife. I also always carry a go-pro in case I need a wide-angle camera or a waterproof/durable camera. In addition, I carry a tripod in my bag for long exposure shots.Feedback
When capturing snowy landscapes, head out early -- the snow gets dirty fast and easily, and the best snowy pictures are the ones that look undisturbed, as if you're the only one in that winter wonderland. Also, try capturing the landscape from different angles, and make sure you aren't too zoomed in, as you want to highlight the fact that everything is covered in snow. Make sure the sun is also hitting the landscape right, as if the sun hits the snow it can either make the shot overexposed or really dark.
