Behind The Lens

This photo was taken in the wading bird rookery of the St. Augustine, Florida Alligator Farm where birds come for the spring and summer to roost and raise their young.
This photo was taken on May 4th, 2013 at 10:47 am. I got to the rookery at 8am - the time they let photographers in to catch the softer morning light and take some pictures before regular visitors start coming in. After a couple of hours, the rain came in, and the rookery completely cleared out. Having been prepared for the rain with the rain jackets for me and the camera, I was the only person that stayed to take pictures. I am very happy I did.
Rain and clouds provided for a nice even light which made it very easy to photograph birds.
This was shot with Nikon D7000 and Sigma 120-300 f/2.8mm lens. I used the railing to balance the heavy camera.
Once I found a bird in a location that would make for a good composition, I would spend a long time watching it, waiting for some interesting behavior. I just had to take he picture when it started scratching its neck and making a funny face. Rain drops created a perfect addition to the background.
Other than basic contrast and sharpening, this photo did not require a lot of processing.
In my camera bag
I always pack my Nikon D7000 with an "all-in-one" Tamron 18-270 lens. I also like having a wide-angle Tamron 10-24 and a macro Nikon 105mm with me. These lenses, a tripod, and polarizing filters give me ability to shoot practically anything I encounter. The lens I used for this shot, Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 (with a 1.4 converter) only travels with me for wildlife photography as it weighs more than some animals.
I like shooting in the rain. It brings out the colors and provides for many interesting and creative photo opportunities. There are a lot of rain covers available for cameras, so you don't have to hide indoors.
