Behind The Lens

Location
This was taken inside Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth, Hampshire, U
Time
This was taken on a day out with the kids during a school holiday where there was an offer for local residents to the attraction to have entry for free - obviously we jumped at the opportunity as we had been meaning to visit since it had been built
Lighting
Most people take the lift as it is a very tall Tower, but we decided to take the stairs going back down. The lighting as you can imagine wasn't brilliant being enclosed without any daylight so I had to use a slower shutter speed out of necessity (not a fan of using flash), but that suited my aims as I also wanted to capture the blur of others defending the stairwell to give a feeling of motion
Equipment
I used my trusty Lumix G1, which I love and have never yet got round to upgrading from. I had to take the shot handheld using the railings as support and hope for the best
Inspiration
I love to see patterns in things when viewed from unusual angles, whether it is in nature or man-made it doesn't matter (seems to be a recurring theme in a lot of my shots). Also, a triangular a airway seems quite unusual in itself
Editing
The postprocessing was done in Photoshop mainly just adjusting using the curves feature to try and achieve a slightly harsh, cross-processed effect to emphasise the chrome railings
In my camera bag
I would generally like to have everything to hand (tripod, light meter, selection of lenses etc), but 9 times out of 10 my shots are grab shots on days out with the family and so usually I just have the camera and a lens. This can be quite restrictive with just the one lens but I think that also means you sometimes have to get a bit more creative with the compositions
Feedback
Don't be scared to go back to basics - composition, shutter speed and aperture settings and their relation to each other, epecially if you are limited on the kit you have with you ... above all, try looking a something differently, in a way that is not the norm and not usually a perspective that the object is normally seen
