Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture at an antique/junk yard in Indianapolis. It was kind of an adventure shoot, just trying to find interesting stuff that I wouldn't ordinarily find around the house. I saw this old car and though that the shinny chrome was odd since the rest of the car was rusted pretty good. The "Antique" sign in the back was an extra bonus to the picture.

Time

I had just dropped my daughter off at school that morning and decided to take some time for myself. I had my camera and tripod in the car, so I went to an old antique yard that I had seen all my life but never visited. So I went in and asked if they would mind me walking around taking pictures. The clerk said it was fine and so I was off. It was about 11am when I came across this old bucket of a car. This is one of my favorite shots, I love showing it to people when I want to show my skills.

Lighting

This is a natural light photo and since I had a tripod it came out pretty sharp. I took three exposures and blended them with Photoshop. I had saw a tutorial on YouTube and wanted to try it out. I love taking natural light pictures, but will use a flash when necessary.

Equipment

I used the only camera I own, my Canon Rebel T3. I had gotten a new lens, a Tamron 18-200mm. No flash, this was a natural light shoot. Since I was walking around an antique yard, I really couldn't carry much equipment. I'm an amateur, but I am learning to use what you have. It's not about having the most expensive equipment, but improving your technique.

Inspiration

I was just looking for something unusual to shot and came across this rusty car. I saw how the chrome was still very shinny and thought that it would make for an interesting photo. It seemed to say, "I may be old, but I still have some shine left in me!" Sounded a lot like I the way I was feeling at the time.

Editing

This shot took three different exposures and I blended them with Photoshop. Nothing difficult, just bringing out all the color, highlights, and shadows that are already there. Add the sparkles and the sun flares just because I like them. I look at photography as an art, and do what I like. Some people like Photoshop, some don't. I do what looks good to me, if someone else likes it, well that's just a bonus.

In my camera bag

I just started photography, so i don't have much. I carry the one camera, my Canon T3, a couple of flashes, my very cheap tripod, and a remote trigger. That's about all I own right now.

Feedback

I started out by getting three different exposures, one that was the correct exposure and the other two were a stop over and an stop under exposed. Since I was on using natural light I used a tripod so as not to get any camera shake in my picture. The rest of the work was in the post-processing when I blended the three photos using Photoshop. I was happy with the shot I took that was correctly exposed, but I wanted to use the other exposures to bring out the highlights and the shadows to bring more depth to the photo.
