Congratulations on your finalist selection. What an amazing image. I do believe they both have the same expression/thought going on.

This is such a unique photo...very zen-like in it's simplicity. Thank you for the explanation about the different exposures...helps when one is totally proficient in Photoshop. I'd put this photo on my wall, anytime, and never tire of looking at it..love it!!!

Boy looking very determined and serious, with the buffalo knowing it's all ok.

Location
This photo was taken in Bali, Indonesia this past July.Time
This was taken right before the sun started setting...we were driving all day trying to find this place that had water buffalos and by the time we got to it there wasn't much time left to shoot as many things that I would have wanted to.Lighting
It was a tricky situation because I had the sun in front of me which required a high speed and a dark subject on the other hand which needed a much slower speed for proper exposure.Equipment
Just my Nikon D5200.Inspiration
This was my second time in Bali. The first time was 10 years ago and I was blown away by the beauty of the white water buffalos In the middle of the rice fields. So this time around I went looking for them. Unfortunately more and more farmers are now using tractors so there are very few of them left on the island.. Needless to say it required a long trip and quite a few wrong turns before we discovered a couple. This particular buffalo was rather wild and the little boy in my photo was the only one who was not afraid of it...the serene moment when they were both gazing at the camera and sharing almost an identical expression didn't last long but I'm happy I was able to capture it.Editing
Yes. I shot two raw images, one for the background and one for the buffalo and the boy. I then opened them up in Photoshop cs6 and I used masks to erase and reveal the correctly exposed parts. Oh, and I added the little birdies! In my camera bag
I have since replaced my nikon d5200 with the full frame nikon d810 which I love, love, love. And since I do a lot more portraits nowadays than landscapes, I carry mostly prime lenses...I am eyeing the 70-200m though for the amazing separation it produces at large apertures.Feedback
Best advise I can give is to shoot raw. If you can, bracket a high contrast scene to get the beautiful sunset. But you must be very still in order for it to work. If this is not possible or if your subject is moving, still shoot raw, expose for your subject with care not to blow the highlights entirely and partly recover them using local adjustments in ACR.
