Location
This is a shot of the Leo Villareal installation called Multiverse. It is in the walkway between the two wings of the National Gallery of art. The light is always moving and changing patterns. I just happened to be lucky enough to catch it while all (most) were lit up.Time
It’s the middle of the day. The great thing about it is the installation is in an underground tunnel walkway between the east and west wings of the National Gallery of art so time of day doesn’t matter - there’s always great light because of the installation.Lighting
As mentioned before, the light is always changing in this installation. You can wait a long time trying to capture it with all lights illuminated (or I guess you could stack multiple photos), but I just got really lucky and didn’t have to wait long at all to capture this.Equipment
The National Gallery doesn’t allow tripods so I captured this hand-held (and no flash).Inspiration
Going through this installation you have the choice to use an automated walkway or to just walk through. Either way you choose, it is literally like being transported through some sort of sci-fi time-space tube. I wanted to capture that feeling of falling/flowing through space and time.Editing
I only did a few minor adjustments like cropping, and a few adjustments of contrast, highlights, etc in Lightroom. In my camera bag
I usually use a telephoto lens - either my Canon 24-240mm, which allows me to capture most of what I want, or - if I want to capture wildlife images - I have a Tamron 18-400 that I also love.Feedback
I mentioned the timing thing previously, and how in this instance I lucked out with timing. There’s a lot of great advice out there about timing and planning your photos, but there’s also often an element of luck. In either case, nothing happens if you don’t get yourself out there, so - plan or not - get out there and make some images.
