Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image while out on one of my photo walks. I try to get out somewhere new a couple of times a month. This shot was taken on the South Downs during one of these walks.

Time

I was heading home after a long walk and decided to get some pictures of the highland cattle. I didn't realise how funny the shot was until I got home and uploaded it onto the computer!

Lighting

It was a tricky shot to take as it was a sunny day, but the cattle were stood in the shade. It took me a little bit of fiddling to get it properly exposed.

Equipment

Nikon D3100 with 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 lens. No other equipment used.

Inspiration

I had been taking photographs of flowers and birds all day and wasn't expecting to see the highland cattle. It was such a surprise I had to get some pictures.

Editing

I photograph in RAW so made the usual adjustments to tone and contrast. As the cattle were in shadows I adjusted this to lighten the image and reduced noise.

In my camera bag

I usually take out a telephoto lens as it is one of those needed to get up close to the wildlife. I enjoy macro photography too so my new 100mm macro usually comes out too.

Feedback

This was one of those chance photographs. I spent a little while watching the cattle finding out what their movements were and looking at where the sun was to get the best light on them. I had to wait patiently for them to face the direction. Patience really is the key to any wildlife/ animal photography!
