Behind The Lens

Location

I took this at the Shibazakura festival on the north-west side of Mt.Fuji. It happens every year from mid-April to late-May with the peak blooming season usually around early to mid-May depending on the weather that year.

Time

This was probably around 2-3 in the afternoon before the sun started getting low.

Lighting

Regardless of the lighting, Mt.Fuji is always best on a clear or at least partially clear sunny day like this one. Sometimes the clouds give it a good accent but that balance is hard to get given that the weather around the tip of the mountain can be a very fickle thing. Best to aim for a clear day.

Equipment

This was with my age old Canon EOS 1100D. No other equipment was necessary.

Inspiration

I was mostly trying to find a way to crop the people out of the photo. Although it doesn’t look it, this park is usually crowded with people during its peak season which is when I went. I saw some other photographers bent pretty low on the ground by the flowerbeds and I thought I’d give it a try as well. My camera doesn’t have a removable screen so it took a couple of tries to get the focus right.

Editing

I adjusted the lighting and shadows a bit to give the picture some more depth. I also cropped out a bit at the top since there was a lot of sky left over.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a zoom lens in my bag for when I need to get a close up shot. Also I'm planning to invest in a good tripod for starting night photography.

Feedback

Definitely allow for some buffer time when planning your trip here as the weather around Mt.Fuji can be very unpredictable and variant. Sometimes it can take days before it because clear enough to even see the tip of the mountain from a distance. Whether it's lighting or colour or just the effect of the picture, making sure that you can go on a clear enough day is crucial. Staying a few days in the area would be ideal as it gives you more time and options.
