Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Italy just on the border of 2 regions called Abruzzo and Lazio. We were on our way to visit a relative in Lazio and when we came along this summit before heading down into Lazio. The area is called Forca d’Acero and is known locally for it’s woodland walks where you can get some heavy snowfall in the winters.

Time

It was in the evening around 6 or 7 PM just as the sun was going down. The light was perfect at that time of day and I got lucky with this shot as to the timing of it.

Lighting

The sun was setting and I came across this path that was covered in leaves and noted the shadows hitting the ground from the trees. I tried to get in as many shadows as possible and with a higher aperture setting I wanted to get the star burst effect from the sun.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100, which was new at the time along with an 18-55mm Nikon lens. Along with some unknown brand of tripod. Aperture setting as well as shutter speed as other details can be seen with the photo.

Inspiration

The shadows projected onto the floor of the trail by the trees because of the location of the sun, while it was getting lower in the sky.

Editing

I didn’t do much post-processing except for a couple of auto enhancement steps and maybe a bit of color saturation. I wasn’t so good at post-processing techniques at the time and so didn’t carry out many on the photo.

In my camera bag

Now I carry a Sony A7R3 along with 2 lenses, one of which is mounted on the body at all times. I usually have mounted the Sony FE4/24-105mm G lens while I always carry a Laowa F2.0/15mm wide angle lens for landscape or architectural photos. Sometimes I also carry a Sony F4.5-5.6/70-300mm G lens. Then I always carry a lens cloth, a Vello Shutterboss, a spare battery as well as the charger for the batteries. I’m usually carrying my tripod also, which is a 3-legged Thing with an Airhed Pro mount.

Feedback

Go a bit early to an area where you may know of such scenery and scout it out because when the sun is setting, it goes fast and you may miss a shot. Be sure to bring a tripod along with you because you’ll need to keep your camera steady. Lastly, enjoy the moment!
