Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a beach, on the island of Cotijuba in Brazil.

Time

I remember that my brother and his fiance had just come to visit us and we were going for an evening walk on the beach. this was taken around 6:00 PM just as the sun was setting.

Lighting

the backlighting in this picture made it the perfect moment to capture their silouetes, and be able to do it without getting too much glare from the sun.

Equipment

this was shot with a Nikon D5100, handheld, with a stock 18-55 lens. i had to kneel on the sand and look up to get the right angle for the shot.

Inspiration

as a self taught photographer im always looking for opertunities to get that perfect shot. seeing my brother and his fiance so happy together and the sun in just the perfect position told me I had to capture the moment.

Editing

there is very little post procesing in this shot. only a few minor touchups to adjust the exposure and get rid of a bit of glare on the sun.

In my camera bag

being an MK (missionaryu kid) in Brazil, i dont really have much money. so all i have in my bag is a Nikon D5100, a stock 18-55 lens, a 2.2x telephoto adapter, and a set of macro lenses.

Feedback

if you are trying to get silouettes, you want what no other photograher wants, backlighting. And lots of it. But you want to make sure that the light source isnt going to leave a glare on the image. ideally your subject should be positioned directly in between you and the light source. It is also beneficial to shoot in raw so you can better adjust the light levels and white balance.
