Location
This photo was taken at the town of Canmore reservoir, its about a third of the way up the mountain side and a place I like to go for a quick paddle after work sometimes.Time
This was taken sometime between 5:30 and 6pm in early NovemberLighting
Being a local, you tend to notice some great pink skies that peak for about 30 seconds at both sunrise and sunset and try to get yourself in position. I've wasted many a great sky reacting as opposed to anticipating, although I shouldn't say wasted them, I still enjoyed them greatly with my two eyes :)Equipment
I used my Nikon 5200 with the 18-105 lens(at 18), I had a Tiffen 10 stop ND filter and tripod. Wireless remote was used to control the 72 sec exposure.Inspiration
This is a place that I like to hop in my kayak for a quick paddle after work, being so close to home and all....I have had some great luck with getting reflection shots from the kayak here and thought that it would be a great vantage point to capture the full moon rising over the mountains. The clouds rolled in and hindered my main subject but I adjusted for it and went long exposure and it gave me something much much greater.Editing
Some basic and minor corrections in lightroom....sharpening, wb etc but if I need to spend more than a couple min editing a photo I generally throw it out.In my camera bag
I use a Nikon 5200. My lenses are all Nikon-35mm prime, 18-105 and 70-300 zoom lenses. The 18-105 is pretty much permanently attached and I use the 70-300 for possible wildlife encounters. I always have a polarizer and full ND filters..a 3, 4 and 10stop. A wireless remote and cleaning gear, oh and at least 2 extra batteries too!!Feedback
If you are fortunate enough to live in an area that gives you a great view anywhere you look, you tend to take things for granted. Sometimes you need to take mental snapshots of places and anticipate a future picture and sometimes you just need to have that camera by your side at all times. The most important advice that I can give no matter where you live, is to learn your gear and shoot in manual mode. You need to be able to command and adjust your camera instantly, you just never know what the world will throw in front of you and you don't want to rely on any "auto" mode.
