The photo was taken at Weavers Field in Bethnal Green, London, UK. It was during the Bonfire Night week in London, tons of fireworks display happening every night.Time
The fireworks started at 7pm but I was already at the venue around 6:30pm. It was actually difficult because even if I got there early and found my spot, people who came in just a few minutes before the fireworks display were squeezing themselves to come in front so they started to block my view. I had to move quite a few times just to get a better view.Lighting
In taking fireworks, I'm really hoping for a dark location (I mean no lamp post in the area or the moon) because I only want to capture the fireworks unless I am in a very good location wherein backgrounds like beautiful architectures like famous landmarks are present. So I set my ISO at the lowest possible ISO my camera can do and my aperture around f11-f16. I was also on Bulb mode.Equipment
Camera: Nikon D90 Lens: 18-105mm F3.5-5.6 Tripod: Yes Flash: No Cable Release: Yes (Because I was on Bulb mode)Inspiration
I love fireworks but I've never tried taking photographs of it. I learned about the Bonfire Night here in London and took the opportunity to go to places where there will be fireworks display. I've seen fireworks photos online and they were amazing, and I said to myself that I'd want to achieve those kinds of shots as well. Especially the fact that we don't see fireworks all year made me want to capture it and enjoy the photos with beautiful colors.Editing
Not much, I edited the RAW photo on Lightroom and just adjusted the contrast, the highlights and blacks in the photo. Also, cropping for a better composition. In my camera bag
I have 3 lens: 50mm f1.4, 18-105mm f3.5-5.6, 55-300 f4.5-5.6. But I don't bring them all, if I know what I'm shooting for that day, I'd only bring the appropriate lens for the shoot. So when I plan to shoot landscape, I'd bring the 18-105mm for wide angle view, I also have an ND400 filter for doing long exposures in daylight, a cable release for bulb mode, and tripod. When I went to London Comic Con last October, I only brought my 50mm prime lens because I planned to take portrait photos of the cosplayers.Feedback
Set the ISO the lowest number possible, the aperture around f8-16, shoot in bulb mode so you have more control on how long you want the shutter open and because it will save you time from changing the shutter speed, you won't have that much time to take photos of fireworks, they usually last for 5-15mins. Pre-focus so by the time the fireworks start you're ready to shoot, it's best to take photos of fireworks at the start because there's not much smoke yet.
