Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph at Featherdale Wildlife Park in Sydney Australia.

Time

This photograph was taken early in the morning when Featherdale had only just opened their gates and all the animals where awake and roaming around the park. This photo was taken on March 29 2013, 9:37am.

Lighting

I wanted the joey to have a beautiful ray of light shining down on his little face. So, with a little bit of patience and watching the the mother and baby bond for a bit I decided to capture this wonderful image of such a precious baby joey. I shot this on manual settings with an ISO of 500, aperture of f/6.3, and shutter speed of 1/400.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 1100D with a Canon EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

At the time I really wanted to showcase a series of 'Baby Animal' works, so I thought what better animal than our National Emblem, the kangaroo. It was just by luck that there was a beautiful kangaroo and her baby who wasn't too shy to pop his little head up from his mother's pouch and say hello. He was very fascinated with the world around him, and especially the camera. It was a lovely opportunity to capture such a beautiful image.

Editing

I was very lucky with this image and did not need any touching up at all. I let the natural light, settings of the camera, patience, and the kangaroo and her joey, do a wonderful job for me.

In my camera bag

Usually I carry my 700D Canon camera, packing two of my favourite lenses. My first lens is the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8, which is great at covering a wide range of lighting, however can be quite heavy. The second lens I usually carry on me is a Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens, and is definitely my favourite lens. This lens enables me to shoot in low lighting, and certainly challenges me as a photographer as there is no zoom. This definitely leaves a lot of room for creativity and thinking outside the box!

Feedback

Patience! I know animals are definitely unpredictable at times, and occasionally it will feel like a life time of waiting just for that perfect image, but it's definitely worth it! Try playing around with manual settings especially because they're always on the move, and taking practice shots of them just having a bit of fun. Sometimes the best shots come unexpectedly.
