The most widespread pink-legged gull in North America, the herring is common in the east and mainly a winter visitor in the west. Polytypic - The term polytypic indicates that a separate description (and type specimen) is needed for each of the distinct populations, instead of one for the entire species. Length 22–27" (56–69 cm); wingspan 53.5–60" (136–152 cm). First-year birds brownish. Acquires adult plumage in 4 years.
