Behind The Lens

Location

Just north and west of Union Station in Downtown Chicago on the corner of Adams and Canal streets.

Time

In the early afternoon, just after 1p.

Lighting

As I do with most of my photography, I used available light. It was an overcast day so the bird and the surrounding flowers were well lit without harsh shadows.

Equipment

On my BlackRapid shoulder strap was my Canon 60D with 18-135mm STM lens.

Inspiration

I was drawn by the color of the flowers initially. Then I noticed the bird out of the corner of my eye. While my family kept walking, I took the time to hunch down and get a little closer to the bird, hoping it wouldn't move before I caught my shot. The entire moment took just minutes.

Editing

I use Adobe Lightroom and I just adjusted the contrast and increased the vibrance a little bit to make the orange pop. That's it!

In my camera bag

I usually carry an extra battery, extra 32GB card and my EF 28mm/1.8. I have a polarizer filter that I don't usually use, preferring to keep these shots as natural possible.

Feedback

Keep an open mind when shooting. On this particular day I was thinking architectural, not nature. No matter where you look there's something interesting. In this case, something simple (like my love for the color orange) led me to a photo I am genuinely proud of.
