Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken next to the sand pump jetty at The Spit on the Gold Coast.

Time

This shot was taken about one hour after sunrise on a winters morning.

Lighting

I started to shoot this from head on with the sun in front but was getting to much shadow. So I moved to the side which allowed the sun light to stay in front but come in on an angle slightly behind. This gave just the right amount of shadow whilst lighting up the majority of the froth.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a cannon 7d, lens was cannon 70-200 l-series. The shot was taken at 115mm @ f3.2, @1/1000, ISO 100. The shot was taken laying down, handheld and about 2m away from the shores reach. Was quite scary as when looking through the view finder I felt like it was 2 inches away!!

Inspiration

After shooting a sunrise and not feeling content, I started to watch the micro waves form around the jetty. The tide was high and there was ot of froth and I'd see the odd little explosion as the tide would hit a bump on the sand. So I set up camp and shot away! People thought I was nuts laying on the sand in the middle of winter shooting 6 inch wave froth!!

Editing

Not a lot of processing at all. Just a little vibrance boost in light room.

In my camera bag

I'll usually take 2 cameras. Cannon 7d and cannon 5d mk11. I'll take 2 lenses. Sigma 24-70 and cannon 70-200. I take along a couple of nd filters, shutter release, head torch, battery pack, spare card and lens cloth. Plus my manfroto tripod.

Feedback

Patience and shoot lots!!! lol!!! I found a high tide is best as it creates more froth and sun light direction as explained earlier. And get down as low as possible!!!
