Location
On my bathroom windowsill, its the only place in the house that gets decent light during mid-day/evening.Time
around 2pm but the light comes through from 12-4pm, its more a case of finding a sunning windowsill spot to do itLighting
well, to get the pattern I used wrapping paper that I had left over from my daughters birthday and taped it to the window. I also used a piece of white to bounce some of the light back into the front to lift the shadowsEquipment
Canon 600d with the 18-55mm kit lens, I bought a macro extension for around £15 online and used that to get close up. I used a roasting tin and a foodbag full of water that I hung from the curtain railInspiration
I had seen so many water droplet shots, I love Tobias Braunings work, his water droplet called the dancing queen won the Sony Photographic Awards. My stuff is nowhere near as sophisticated but I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it without the fancy equipment, at the time I dint own an off camera flashEditing
Yes, I shot in raw and lifted the exposure slightly on the front as the white card wasnt enough to lift all the shadowsIn my camera bag
I carry a 70-300mm tamron telephoto lens a 105mm sigma macro a sigma off camera flash, cockin filters, a polarizing filter 5 spare batteries and x 2 32gig sd cards! basic stuff really and not expensiveFeedback
be patient, I took around 800 images and only 5 or so where keepers the first time. Make a small hole with a pin in the food bag and sit and watch the drips, learn the timing of them. Dont shoot in continous mode, you think this would help but really it just messes up your timing, try to be patient instead. Dont be in a rush, make sure you have a few hours that you can play with where you are uninterrupted! Look around for wrapping paper! scrap paper exc, dont throw anything away!it can be used for alsorts of things!
