Location
This picture was taken in October of 2014 when I lived in Winnipeg, MB; Canada.Time
I set out early in the morning in search of a house that would suit the image I was hoping to create. It wasn't until early afternoon when I found the Archbishop's residence and the clouds were in my favour!Lighting
The sun was peaking through the clouds so I was able to use a narrow aperture to make sure the whole building was in focus. I bracketed my exposure for maximum detail and to produce a high dynamic range image.Equipment
Simply shot, hand held, with a Canon Rebel t3i using a prime 50mm lens.Inspiration
I love Halloween. I remember, as a young girl, going trick or treating at the spooky neighbourhood house. The yard was dark, with overgrown grass and the majestic trees that framed the house made the walk to the door very scary. It was like walking into a horror movie, thinking that a cloud of rain and lightening always hovered over the old mansion. I knew the second I walked in front of the Archbishop's residence that I would be able to replicate this childhood memory.Editing
I processed the bracketed images using Photomatix Pro. The HDR effect gave my image an eerie appearance. All other editing was done in Photoshop CS 6. I lowered the exposure in the scene, brushed over several areas of the photo to add light, colour and texture. I desaturated the image before adding the special FX of lightening and rain through various layers and techniques. Finally I added a dark vignetting. I like the way it turned out and that it bring me back to my childhood "trick or treating" days.In my camera bag
Along with two cameras, my bag contains one prime and two zoom lenses. A speedlight with extra batteries, two memory cards, a lens cleaning kit and a small tripod. I also have my Smart phone (useful for extra needed lighting!!) and I have recently added coloured gels for the speedlight.Feedback
Your imagination is the first tool that you will need when attempting to create these types of photos. Don't let the lack of gear dissuade you from making a good picture. I have seen shots taken from a cell phone and edited into amazing works of art. "Dont shoot what it looks like...shoot what it feels like" ~David Alan Harvey
