Great action shot and really shows the true view you get at a F1 race behind the barriers.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the 2013 Grand Prix at Monaco

Time

This photo was taken during the third practice session that started around 11:00 AM. The exact time of the photo was: 25th May 2013 at 12:13 PM.

Lighting

It was a partly cloudy day and was perfect to take fast action shots. I didn't have much control over the lighting as we were outdoors. i set my camera to ISO 100 so that i could get the best quality pics by make full use of the available light.

Equipment

I used a canon 7D with a 70-200 f2.8 IS II lens. To get the car tac sharp, the shot was handheld and I was panning with the car. It took me a couple of tries before i could get the full car in the frame. The other settings on the camera were: Aperture: f8.0 Shutter Speed: 1/125 Focal Length: 70mm ISO: 100

Inspiration

I had seen many cool panning shots of different kinds and always wanted to capture these myself. Since I got the opportunity to see an F1 race for the first time in my life, it was the perfect opportunity for me to fulfil this desire. The concentration of the driver, sheer speed and the deafening sound of the engines was enough to keep me clicking in order to get that one perfect shot summarising all these elements.

Editing

The photo was cropped, contrast increased and white balance done.

In my camera bag

I carry equipment depending on the day. I would normally have a Canon 5D Mark III (recently purchased) with the 24-105L lens and a 50mm 1.8 in the bag. Other things i own/carry are: Canon 100mm f2.8 L Macro Canon 70-200 f4 L Speedlight 580 EX II Pocketwizards Wireless Remote

Feedback

I would say, think about the equipment you will need for anything as planning is the key in nailing the shots on the day. At that time, I didn't own a telephoto lens at the time so I planned in advance and hired the canon 70-200 f2.8 L lens (and other lenses) for the duration of the trip. I am glad that I did as otherwise I would have missed a lot of the action. Although i would have tried my best to get the shots from, the equipment i already owner, but planning made these things a little bit simpler. The other thing i would say is keep trying till you get it perfect in camera. Practise makes perfect. Happy Clicking.
