Location
The photo was during during a hike in the Alps, Switzerland. The location is known as "Wildkirchli" near Ebenalp which is in the Canton of AppenzellTime
The photo was taken short before sunset. After the photo we had dinner in a mountain restaurant and walked down in the dark with headlights.Lighting
I was aware of the amazing building and the conditions at that place, since I live nearby. I checked before how the sun will go depending on the time of the day, using the sun/shadow simulation in google-earth: ok, nowadays there's a smartphone app, but this picture was taken before these apps were available ;)Equipment
Tripod, Canon 6D, 1/40s, f=45mm, f/6.3 with a 24-105L lens.Inspiration
This building has been in my memories since ever, as one of the most amazing mountain huts. So I was just following my desire to bring these memories in a picture. And: I took this picture before it was published in national geographics and before the time when it got overcrowded by too much publicity so that the tenants gave up. So, we should also be aware of this kind of responsibility to conserve our world and save the nature, when we take and publish pictures.Editing
Since it's the shadow side of the rock, that image asks for HDR. Even the huge dynamic range of the 6D wouldn't cover the contrast between the warm evening sunlight and the dramatic rocks and house in the shadow. During postprocessing I always follow the goal to reproduce the honest visual impression when I was there, as I have felt the scene with bare eyes. I try to avoid exaggeration or artifacts. In my camera bag
Usually I decide what kind of images to take before I leave. So I either have my landscape/travel focal lengths (17-35L, 24-105L), or I take my telelens for action photography (100-400L), or my macro lens (100L) with me. Tripod, gradual-grey filter, and a little-stopper make my toys complete :)Feedback
Find your own spots. Do not follow the crowds, like it happened to this spot, after it was published in National Geographic (long after I had taken that image).
