Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in our front yard, after we had let the fallen leaves accumulate. We let it go longer than our neighbors appreciated, but the end result was worth it. The cat is an indoor cat, but we brought him outside for this particular photo shoot. He was a little nervous at first, but ended up enjoying his time out of the house.

Time

This photo was taken in the morning hours, when I had good lighting from the Sun. It was a beautiful late fall morning, and there wasnt any clouds in the sky.

Lighting

I used the natural light from the Sun. He was moving around through the pile of leaves, so I wasnt able to get too many shots while the Sun was directly on his face.

Equipment

Taken with a Nikon D7100, Sigma 50-150mm 2.8 lens, handheld. I prefer to be fluid when taking pictures of pets/animals, so I dont use a tripod when shooting.

Inspiration

I believed the color of the leaves that were accumulating in our yard would make for a nice contrast and background for a photo shoot of our black cat, Magic. This was also around the time of Halloween, and thought that the black cat with the orange colored leaves was appropriate for a holiday themed photo.

Editing

This photo was edited using a couple different software programs. Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Lightroom, and Windows Photo Editor. Im not very proficient with software editing, so I use a couple different programs and pick aspects from each that I feel comfortable with. This photo, I adjusted the levels of contrast, the orange/yellow colors, some clarity, cropping, and added a slight color burn for the leaves.

In my camera bag

My main focus currently, is capturing images of pets. The first lens I use for this is my Sigma 50-150mm 2.8. My camera is the Nikon D7100, which isnt a full frame, but a crop frame camera, so that lens works better for me than a 70-200. I like to capture wildlife as well, mostly birds, and use a Sigma 150-500mm 5-6.3. It is older and slightly heavy, but i still use it handheld the majority of the time. Another lens for shooting nature that i use is a Tamron 90mm macro 2.8 lens. This lens is usually used for shooting insects, and some plant life. I also carry a Tokina 11-16mm wide angle lens. This I use for some landscapes, but more often I use it for shooting urban decay and abandoned buildings.

Feedback

When photographing animals, I always try to get low, to get near eye level. I pick a spot that has nice framing or background when capturing images of dogs in action. I typically will lie on my stomach, while propped on my elbows to get ground level shots, and shoot from a knee if there is hills involved. This photo was taken while kneeling, so that I could shoot over the piled leaves. When photographing animals, like people, its most effective to focus on their eyes.
