Behind The Lens

Location

This photo has been taken on local farm where I have converted workshop (old barn) to a small studio.

Time

Its really hard to say what time we shot this picture. The time was passing by quickly but I just remembered now I was starving so it was around lunch time ;)

Lighting

Due all the small "dust" particles I have used two softboxes with studio strobes as a back light. One on each side. From the front I have used just 2m by 2m silk in a frame just to bounce some light back to model. I had another light studio strobe ready to use in 7ft octobox but I didn't use it at all because it wasn't necessary

Equipment

I have used Canon 60D with a my lovely Sigma 17-50 2.8. I used two softboxes with studio strobes 250ws each everything wirelessly triggered. Backdrop was super black 2.72 seamless roll from Creative. Stands I have used where C stands with a sandbags. Didnt want to hurt anyone. It happen before, that I forgot to put some sandbags under my massive octobox and everything went down and ripped the background, since that I am extra cautious :)

Inspiration

I have seen article about this while ago on the internet and I h said to myself that I have to do it. This is very messy shooting, full of fun as well. My next project is to do it in a nude version so stay tuned

Editing

I didn't do much post processing on it. Maximum 5mins job. A bit curve adjusting, clarity and clone out some rubbish on the floor.

In my camera bag

Well this is very interesting question. It really matter what I am shooting. Usually the rucksack is pretty heavy I use a lot my 60D, Sigma 17-50 2.8, 50mm 1.8, 70-300, lots of M42 lenses primes 28mm 2.8 vivitar , 135 2.8 but my favourite from M42 for portraits its the bookeh monster 15 blades Jupiter 200 F4 Also I use Flexaret VII when I am after some film photography Tripod if manfrotto with joystick head (very heavy and I like it I put my bag as extra weight and it doesn't move at all not even in a storm) Manfrotto clamps and magic arm and gorila pod for flashes 2x 430ex2 and 1 Jessops 360 and lots of junk :D crock clips business cards etc etc etc

Feedback

Definitely you will need high ceiling and wider standard lens. Try cover as much as possible because the flour will get everywhere. We have used 6kg of a plain flour. What you can try is to mix the flour with a holi powder for some colour effect. Use a shovel one from each side to throw flour from each side. 2 assistants are must for best result. Also set the flash for second curtain.
