Behind The Lens

Location

the photo was taken in Sardinia, in the marine protected area of Seu and Mal di ventre islandthis , near Cabras (OR)

Time

this was taken on July 20, 2014 at 00.30, before the moon arose in the sky and the Milky Way was still visible.

Lighting

the place was very dark, so I chose to do two different shots with different settings for the foreground and for the background! For the foreground I made a shot of 9 minutes, f/4.5 (for more details) and Iso 640 (for less noise) and an exposure of 30 seconds, f/2.8 and Iso 6400 for the sky!

Equipment

this was shot on a nikon D600, with a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 lens and a manfrotto tripod. I was shot with a timer remote controller to limit vibration and set the desired time.

Inspiration

were looking for a nice place away from light pollution to photograph the milky way, after a long walk we found ourselves in a small beach where the small trunk immediately drew my attention... After several tests I found a vertical composition that followed ideally the position of the Milky Way

Editing

before joining the two shots, I made adjustments based on Camera Raw, I corrected the white balance, eliminated some noise, adjust contrast and sharpness. Then I imported the file into Photoshop and merged manually 2 photos, I made final adjustments and converted to TIFF and JPEG for the web!

In my camera bag

in my bag are located: 2 reflex Nikon (D600 and D7000), the lens that I use the most are Nikon 16-35 f/4, Rokinon 14mm f/2.8, Tamron 24-70 VC f/2.8, Nikon 50mm f/1.8 G, Rokinon (samyang) 8mm fisheye. Tripod: Manfrotto MT190 CXPRO4 and MANFROTTO 055 X PRO B. Filters ND and GND, timer remote controller and a torch.

Feedback

my advice is to look for an area away from light pollution, to be careful to focus, do not go alone at night, do not make shots longer than 30 seconds for the stars (with wide angles lens), using a bright lens (at least f / 2.8), to bring a torch, and pay attention to the composition!
