Congratulations on your win! I love the colours and simplicity of this photo. The lighting is something out of this world.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard, Windsor, Ontario

Time

It was around noon

Lighting

Even if it was a bright sunny day at noon, you can still get some really nice pictures in the harsh light. I went back towards the sunset to try some more shots but the results where not so good.

Equipment

Camera Nikon D3200, lens Tamron SP 60 mm macro F/2, handheld

Inspiration

It was a nice day of spring garden cleanup (yes, end of May is still spring in Canada ? ) when something caught my eye in the nearby tree. Two drops of sap where shining in the sun. Grabbed my camera and few scratches later (had to stay in all kind of awkward positions in order to catch the light) I got the perfect angle and camera settings for the shot. Since I got the macro lens (few days before this shot) I realised that everywhere is full of photo subjects. Just have to stop and take a closer look.

Editing

I used Lightroom for post-processing (I shoot RAW) and some crop - the drops where just few milimeters

In my camera bag

I use a backpack :). Normally I have the 55-300 lens on the body because usually the birds (one of my favourite subjects) don't stay to long for me to change the lenses. I carry a 17-50 lens for landscapes and the 60 mm macro lens for macro and portraits. Of course shutter release cable, some ND filters, lens cleaning kit, tripod. Kind of heavy - my wife says I'm a maniac

Feedback

My advice - look around you - the subjects are endless. Work the scene, try different angles, settings - 99% of the time the first shot is not the best one.
